“It's a joy to see the wildlife of Africa up close, then capture it on canvas”
Born in 1960, Norman was raised on a farm in rural Hertfordshire. His first expedition was to the surrounding countryside - inspired by artists such as Archibald Thorburn, and captivated by local birds, he began sketching and then painting them, developing his love of nature and art in tandem. Some of these works would later go on to be published as greeting cards.
After finishing school, he spent over a decade in commercial illustration, working with some of Hertfordshire’s leading design consultants. But Norman had lost the passion for his craft; he longed to return to the nature that drew him to art as a boy. Having lost his way, he wrote to wildlife artist David Shepherd, seeking advice on what to do next. His response?
“Paint from life” Shepherd wrote back, “outside in the fresh air”. So that’s exactly what Norman did.
In 1993, Norman visited Kenya for the first time. To his delight, the landscapes and wildlife reignited his passion for fine art. He found himself sketching and photographing scenes that captivated him as he was in his youth. These would inspire the sweeping vistas and majestic moments found in his savannah paintings. Since then, he has travelled to many different reserves and parks in Kenya such as Samburu, Masai Mara, and Aberdare, the sights of which still inspire and motivate him to this day.
Norman’s paintings have gone on to achieve national success, having been published by one of the UK’s leading fine art publishers, and his original paintings being auctioned, and featuring in an editorial by Popular Crafts Magazine. A painting of his was also shortlisted for the Daily Mail's 'Not the Turner Prize'. As he continues work at his studio however, he does not seek the limelight. He simply continues to do what he loved to back on the farm: observe nature and bring it to life, one brushstroke at a time.
